About Solid Rock Pre-School in Horsham
At Solid Rock Pre-School we care for children from 6 months to 5 years, and provide a range of age appropriate resources and activities to encourage their development right up until they are ready to join ‘Big’ school.
Our Philosophy
Our philosophy is based on exploration and creativity. We follow a child-led approach to learning in our setting, as we believe that this helps children develop a broader range of knowledge of topics that they are genuinely interested in! We find that children truly flourish and grow into confident individuals when they are in control of what they learn.
The child-led approach allows children to choose the activity, location, and length of time on a task, and our teachers will structure learning around what they are doing and will integrate key learning and developmental milestones into the activity. We do this by:
- Ensuring there is ample outdoor time (weather permitting) for the children to follow their natural curiosity and interests.
- Offering developmentally appropriate indoor gross motor activity.
- Providing an engaging learning opportunities that encourage children to reach key developmental milestones.
- Observing and interacting with the children and documenting the day-to-day adventures and activities of each child and sharing this through our famly portal app.

Who We Are
We decided to do things a bit differently here by creating a space which fosters early learning in a fun and safe environment where children from 6 months to 5 years can explore the world around them.
Solid Rock is located in Warnham Village Hall, Warnham. The Village Hall has a large space which means the children have lots of opportunities to explore and learn through play!
We believe our innovative approach gives children a bright and positive start in life as we actively encourage both exploration and discovery, as well as the importance of emotional intelligence and building friendships.

Our setting includes:
- Doorstep access to the wonderful West Sussex countryside.
- A commercial size kitchen where we prepare home cooked meals everyday.
- Large open plan space for ages to mix and learn from each other.
- A large selection of equipment that is rotated daily.
Free Flow Play
Our setting incorporates outside play provisions by allowing free flow play!
Free flow play allows children to move independently and encourages the use of the whole environment that is available to them. This can benefit the child in multiple ways, including:
- Greater independence, as children are given the freedom to explore whichever area sparks their natural curiosity. By allowing them to pursue their own interests, they will naturally grow in confidence and independence.
- Physical well-being, by offering the children the choice to play outdoors, enables them to run around and build their physical coordination and strength.
- Progress at their own pace, when children aren’t rushed into learning, they are able to fully embrace the skills that they are developing and become truly confident in their ability when they are faced with new challenges.
The younger and older children come together several times throughout the day giving them plenty of chances to interact together. However, we do also have a separate area for our Under 2’s so they can play safely with age-appropriate resources and activities.
Solid Rock is equipped with purposely chosen play equipment for pre-school age children to extend their learning as they play as well as age-appropriate equipment for the wrap around provision ensuring the older children are entertained.
Merging Teaching and Childcare
We believe that it’s never too early to start learning and that it’s vital to always present opportunities for children to learn and grow as soon as they start at our setting!
Here at Solid Rock Pre-School, our aims are:
- To work in close partnership with parents and carers to develop the whole child in terms of intellectual, creative, social, emotional, physical, language, and moral awareness.
- To provide a safe and secure environment where the children and their parents/carers feel welcome and able to voice any opinions, concerns and ask questions freely.
- To provide a lively, attractive, stimulating, and caring environment where each child can develop to his/her full potential.
- To develop language and literacy skills so that children can listen attentively and ask questions, express themselves, and instill in them a love of books.
- To develop children’s mathematical skills, such as number recognition, pattern making, and methods to problem solve which can be used at home and later at school.
- To provide a variety of creative, aesthetic, physical, scientific, technological, musical, and educational activities.
- To give children the opportunity to gain observation and investigation skills crucial to raising awareness of knowledge and understanding of their environment and world in which they live.
- To provide the children with the opportunity to develop personal, social, and emotional skills, to be aware of their own needs and those of the people around them. To respect and consider the consequences of their words and actions.
- To lead children gently towards independence.
- To prepare the children for entry into school.

Key Workers
At Solid Rock Preschool, we have a Key Person system. Each child is assigned a Key Person when they join our setting. This member of staff will act as your key contact and will work with you and your child to plan and deliver your child’s learning journey.
We greatly value the strong, positive relationships we build with the children and their families. We believe that children settle best when they have a key person to relate to, who knows them and their parents/carers well.

What to Expect from Solid Rock Pre-School
